Case registered against several persons for unlawful assembly, rioting

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Rural police have launched a probe into the recent assault of a police officer and a school teacher by a group of people in Perumbavoor.

According to the police, a case has been registered against several persons including members of the parent-teacher association of Jama Ath School at Thandekkad for unlawful assembly, rioting and causing hurt to deter a public servant from discharging his duty. The case pertains to the assault of Binoy K. Joseph, a teacher and the police officer who accompanied him to the school. Binoy had been earlier suspended from the school after being booked under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly using foul language. He, however, approached the court and received a favourable verdict ordering his reinstatement.

“As soon as the teacher entered the school on Friday, he was accosted by a group led by a few members of the PTA, and was thrashed. A few students, who witnessed the clash also joined the violent mob, worsening things,” officers said.

The policeman who attempted to intervene sustained severe head injuries in the attack. On an alert, a police team rushed to the spot but the mob refused to let Binoy go. The police officers had to use force to disperse the crowd and take the injured for medical treatment.

According to the police, some of the accused have been identified while a probe is on to ascertain the juveniles among the accused.
