Barbara Taylor Bradford hints at Emma’s Secret AND Cavendon Hall TV series

BARBARA TAYLOR BRADFORD has revealed that there are plans to adapt Emma’s Secret for the small screen.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the 84-year-old writer said that her husband and film producer Robert Bradford was “keen” on turning the 2003 book into the TV show.

She explained: “She is one of those characters I created that people have never forgotten. They say, ‘When are you going to write another Emma Harte book?’”

Taylor Braford added: “That’s the one thing he’s really focused on at the moment, but he’s also focused on the Cavendon series because there’s a lot of drama in it and a lot of people have approached him about that, so we’ll see.

“I always say, what is meant to be will be and it will happen when it’s meant to happen.”

The interview comes as the legendary author’s A Woman of Substance 1984 miniseries airs on Freeview Channel True Entertainment.

A Woman of Substance was adapted from Taylor Bradford’s 1979 debut novel and is one of the best-selling books of all time.

The drama stars Jenny Seagrove as heroine Emma Harte, who works her up through society in the early 20th Century and builds up a successful through graft and determination.

Along the way she’s met with heartbreak and adversity as she expands her company.

A Woman of Substance also stars Liam Neeson, Miranda Richardson, Deborah Kerr and Barry Bostwick.

Reflecting on the longevity and success of her work, she said: “Well, you’re always a bit surprised when things last but my husband made these marvellous movies over the years and now they’re going to be showing again.

“One thing that surprised me the most is that last year when True Entertainment [aired it] - the amazing thing to me was that we took all the ratings. They [the channel] were surprised and we were too but people didn’t turn them off and kept watching.”

She explained that it was also a ratings hit when it originally aired on Channel 4 back in Eighties and remains a firm TV favourite among audience when it is repeated around the world today.

Taylor Bradford will be returning to Britain to launch her 32nd novel The Secrets of Cavendon, which is the final instalment in a series of four books.

The Secrets of Cavendon begins in 1949 and features characters from the previous three novels as well as a new generation of the family.

“It’s about two families in Yorkshire and they’ve been involved over the centuries and this one is more modern, [it’s a] funny time because England was broke, the empire was finished,” Taylor Bradford said.

She added: “They were potholes and big bomb sites everywhere that had never been fixed. After the euphoria of winning the Second World War, a kind of depression descended on everybody.”

Taylor Bradford might have wrapped up the Cavendon series but she has already started formulating ideas for her next gripping saga.

The Barbara Taylor Bradford film season airs on True Entertainment, Freeview 60 throughout November and her new book Secrets of Cavendon (HarperCollins) out on November 30.
