A representative for the 67-year-old told Express.co.uk: "He was in an induced coma but he is currently conscious and surrounded by family."
He was rushed to hospital near him home in Fort Lauderdale three days ago and a source close to the family told TMZ his condition was "grim."
David became a huge international star when he took the role of Keith Partridge at just 20. As well as being a pin-iup adored by screaming fans, he used the musical numbers in the show to springboard his own pop career.
