England 30 - Australia 6: England secure big Autumn International victory at Twickenham

ENGLAND struck the first blow over Australia in the week the Ashes get under way in Brisbane.

Conditions at The Gabba on Wednesday night however will be much different to those in a grey and wet south-west London.

Cricket skipper Joe Root will be hoping that the margin of England’s victory, their biggest ever over Australia despite it being a little harsh on the Wallabies, will serve as a good omen.

Eddie Jones, himself a huge cricket fan, will take great delight in defeating his home nation just a week after reports of an impending crisis appeared to be greatly exaggerated.

It was billed as the biggest test that England will face this autumn with Australia, who recently have claimed a win over the All Blacks, unbeaten in seven games.

And it is one that they will rightly claim to have passed with flying colours to cement them firmly in second place behind the back-to-back world champions New Zealand.

England were determined to show from the first whistle that last week’s dour performance against Argentina with an experimental side was a mere blip.

They looked to inject more pace into the game and Owen Farrell settled any nerves with a sixth-minute penalty to give them the lead.

The conditions were more suited to England than Australia, who like to play an expansive game, but the home side still had a massive let-off after 26 minutes.

Not for the first time they were grateful to video referee Simon McDowell.

Marika Koroibete missed Tevita Kuridrani’s hack through but Michael Hooper, who touched down, was adjudged offside earlier in the move and the try was chalked off.

Within six minutes Hooper found himself in the sin-bin after two offences in a minute.

Farrell slotted over the penalty and things got even worse for Australia on the stroke of half-time when Kurtley Beale was sent packing for ten minutes for a deliberate knock-on.

Beale protested his innocence but to no avail. England failed to make them pay and instead it was a Australia who drew first blood after the break with a long-range Reece Hodge penalty. The bad luck for the Wallabies continued when Kuridrani dropped an easy Koroibete pass and England clinically made them pay.

Beale had a brain freeze when he tried to usher Ben Youngs’ kick into touch and Elliot Daly kicked the ball over the line and ran through to touch down.

If that had Australia coach Michael Cheika fuming, on 69 minutes he was sent over the edge. Koroibete, despite the best efforts of Chris Robshaw, looked to have scored a try but McDowell said Stephen Moore had obstructed the former England skipper.

Cheika stormed from the coach’s box and on his way to the sidelines appeared to exchange words with the crowd.

Within three minutes Jonathan Joseph took advantage of slippy conditions to apply the finishing touch to Danny Care’s intelligent kick.

Care, pushing for a start against Samoa next week, sweetly kicked through in the last minute for Jonny May to score his tenth international try.

And there was still time for Care to seal England’s biggest winning margin over Australia when May set him up.
