Azzurri exit from football is heartbreaking

This refers to the article, “The Italian football nightmare” (November 17) by Shakya Mitra. Italy's failure to qualify for the next year's World Cup football at Russia is sad news for football connoisseurs. It is after 60 good years that the Azzurri will be out of action in a world cup. The excruciating draw against Sweden in the play-off decider, and an aggregate loss to the team, was shocking to say the least. Though there were a few names known for their individual brilliance, and had played vintage football with their respective clubs, they faltered while representing the nation. A majority of Italians are, however, blaming coach Gian Piero Ventura for his tactical blunders that resulted in the fiasco. The 69-year-old has now been sacked though his contract ran up to 2020; but the decision appears to be too late in the day.

His mishandling star player, Lorenzo Insigne, in the game against Sweden has been torn apart. Though Ventura has emotionally gone on record that he would say sorry for the loss but not for the hard work put by him and the team.  At the end of the day, it is the final result that matters the most. Retirement of top  players like Daniele De Rossi, Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Barzagli is no good news for Italy. These veterans were part of the 2006 World Cup winning team and their inspirational presence will be missed. There is a widespread belief that the team should start from scratch, and the rebuilding process should start sooner than later. Italy is going for the election next May and a positive football result could have lifted the mood of the nation.
