Celtic news: Brendan Rodgers insists players can compete with PSG stars

CELTIC travel to France to take on Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Brendan Rodgers was delighted with Celtic's last Champions League outing

The French boast a galaxy of big names including Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani.

And Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers admits one of his toughest roles is convincing his players they can compete against these superstars. But he believes their last performance in the Champions League, where they were edged out 2-1 by Bayern Munich, proves they can go toe-to-toe with the best.

He said: “People like Cavani and Mbappe have a belief that they are top players and in the biggest games they want to show it and that’s what they do.

“It’s a constant job for me to convince ours that we can compete at that level.

Brendan Rodgers

“In our last game against Bayern Munich we showed that. It’s difficult for players at times to do that but it’s my job to convince them to go and be competitive and do their very best, which, in the main, our lot do.

“We performed very well against Bayern Munich but didn’t get the result, so there’s bits to learn from that.

“We gave everything in the game, we defended well, we came from being behind and got level and with 15 minutes to go we had a great chance of getting a result.

“But for the three minutes after we scored we gave the ball away three times and didn’t press as hard as we normally would – then all of a sudden you are 2-1 behind, so that’s the lessons that we are finding out all the time.”

Rodgers believes Celtic's players can compete with PSG's superstars

Celtic face a daunting task against the side that thrashed them 5-0 in their Group B opener.

PSG are one of the favourites to win the Champions League, but Rodgers wants his side to show their true personality and display confidence in possession.

He said: “At this level, it’s not so much about the possession you have, it’s about having dangerous possession.

“There are going to be long spells when you don’t have the ball – but can you be dangerous when you have it?

“Can you show the personality and confidence to show you belong on that stage?”
