Nagpur: The tender for constructing the first phase of dry port at Sindi Railway (district Wardha) would be floated in a month. It would be built on public private partnership (PPP) mode, Neeraj Bansal, deputy chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) announced here on Saturday. JNPT is building four dry ports in the state — Wardha, Jalna, Nasik and Sangli.

Addressing a press conference, Bansal said, "The first phase of dry port is spread over an area of 82 acre. It will have warehouses, cold storages, customs offices, rail siding, truck terminal, etc. In the next phase the dry port will be expanded and in the third an industrial zone spread over 124 acre will be set up so that industries can take advantage of the dry port."

Bansal further said that the dry port-cum-industrial zone was spread over an area of 350 acre. "We have acquired the entire land and a compound wall is being built around it. We will provide this to the private party, which will invest over Rs400 crore in developing it," he added.

Commenting on Concor's inland container depot (ICD), the senior JNPT official admitted that the dry port would compete with the facility. "Competition will lead to provision of better facilities and lowering of charges. In future both facilities will be required," he said.

On the remaining three dry ports in the state, Bansal said that work had begun on the one in Jalna whereas land had been identified for Nasik and Sangli facilities.

The official expressed confidence that the Nagpur-Mumbai communication super-expressway would boost economy of Vidarbha as well as help the dry port. "We will able to send goods to JNPT from the dry port within hours. This will lead to increase in export of perishable goods as well as reduction in inventory of importers," he said.
