Polesitter Denny Hamlin was fastest in the first of two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice sessions Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The No. 11 Toyota paced the session at 171.130 mph. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second fastest at 170.681 mph. Earnhardt is making his final start Sunday afternoon in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and will come from the rear of the field after changing engines yesterday.
Third fastest was championship contender Martin Truex Jr. at 170.020 mph. Truex was the fastest of his title competitors.
However, the No. 78 team had to go to work late in the session after Truex scraped the wall, causing minor damage to the right-side fenders. Also scraping the wall during the session were Chase Elliott, Jamie McMurray, and Trevor Bayne.
Kurt Busch (169.545 mph) and Kasey Kahne (168.972 mph) completed the top five. Ryan Newman (168.645 mph), Joey Logano (168.497 mph), Bayne (168.308 mph), Ryan Blaney (168.251 mph), and Brad Keselowski (167.900 mph) rounded out the top 10.
Truex and Keselowski were the only two championship contenders in the top 10 on the speed charts. Kyle Busch was 16th fastest at 167.188 mph and Kevin Harvick was 17th at 167.017 mph.
There were no major incidents in the 55-minute session.
