OnePlus fans have been warned about an alleged security backdoor

Android fans have been warned the OnePlus brand of smartphones could be at risk of having sensitive photos exposed by cyber criminals.

It has been claimed the OnePlusLogKit app, which reportedly comes loaded onto OnePlus phones, has a security backdoor.

One prominent hacker on Twitter said the backdoor puts users at risk of having photos, saved files or their GPS location exposed by cyber criminals.

The tweeter, named Elliot Alderson after the main character on hit TV series Mr Robot, raised the issue to their thousands of followers.

In an extensive thread directed at the official OnePlus Twitter account, the hacker detailed the alleged security backdoor.

In their first tweet, @fs0c131y wrote: “Hi @Oneplus! Remember me? Let's talk about another debug app you left in your device.

“OnePlusLogKit is a system application which allow you to do a multitude of things: get wifi logs, nfc logs, gps logs”.

Describing one piece of code, Elliot Alderson added: “This GrabOtherActivity is capable of dumping the media databases aka all your videos, images”.

They added all a hacker had to do to trigger the app into logging data and accessing it was to enter a number on the smartphone's dial pad.

This would automatically open up the app's interface where the logging feature can be switched on or off, Bleeding Computer reported.

Express.co.uk has contacted OnePlus for comment and is awaiting a response.

The news comes days after tweeter Elliot Alderson raised another issue.

They claimed that a testing app called EngineerMode has been left on OnePlus smartphones which provides users with root-level access to the phone.

This means, once a malicious party has physical access to your phone, they can plant trackers or malware easily.

In the aftermath OnePlus issued a statement saying the app would be removed in the next operating system update.

They said: "While we don't see this as a major security issue, we understand that users may still have concerns and therefore we will remove the adb root function from EngineerMode in an upcoming OTA."

The news comes after OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus 5T at a major event in New York yesterday.

The OnePlus 5T reduces the bezels on the top and bottom of the device to make way for a six-inch AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio.

The screen looks like OnePlus’s take on Samsung’s Infinity Display which debuted with the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ earlier this year.

To make way for the bigger screen, the fingerprint scanner has now been moved to the back of the device.

OnePlus said the rear fingerprint scanner is not a compromise as the 5T also includes facial recognition, similar to Apple’s Face ID with the iPhone X.

The OnePlus 5T will also keep the 3.5mm headphone port, which remains with OnePlus stating its users want this popular way of connecting headphones.

The OnePlus 5T will launch on November 21, and costs £449 in the UK and $499 in the US.
