The Ex-servicemen of IV Garhwal Rifles celebrated Shaurya Diwas to commemorate its valour in the battle of Nuranang (1962) on Friday.
The former soldiers of the unit assembled at Doon Sainik Institute (DSI) on the day and offered tributes to the brave hearts who scarified their lives in the battle. The event was formally inaugurated by the chief guest Durga Maya widow of Late Col H V Rai by lighting the lamp.
Speaking on the occasion, the President of Uttarakhand Ex Services League, Brigadier R S Rawat (Rtd) said that the IV Garhwal is known by the name of fighting fourth in Indian Army.
He informed that on this day in 1962 the warriors of this battalion showed exemplary bravery. In this war 162 Jawans attained martyrdom while 68 got injured. Two hundred sixty four Jawans were imprisoned by the Chinese in this battle. Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat attained martyrdom after showing exemplary bravery in the battle.
The IV Garhwal has received two Mahavir Chakras (posthumous), Seven Vir Chakras (Posthumous) and Sena medal. Speaking on the occasion the founder of Youth Foundation Col Ajay Kothiyal praised the Jawans of the battalion and conveyed his greetings.
He informed that the foundation has prepared about 2600 youth for recruitment in the armed forces. In Balawala and Srinagar special training camp for girls has been set up, he informed.
The event was coordinated by Captain Nandan Singh Butola (Rtd). A cultural programme was also organised on the occasion. Six former prisoners of wars, Shiv Raj Singh Negi, Virendra Singh Rawat, Lt Col Vishnu Barthwal (Rtd), Shambhu Prasad Semwal, Subedar Balbir Singh Negi were felicitated on the occasion.
