VADODARA: The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) on Friday deposited Rs 11 lakh in a civil court in connection with a case filed by a contractor.
Sachin Padhye of SP Associates had approached the civil court last year after the association refused to pay him Rs 23.57 lakh towards dues. Padhye was given a project of refurbishing the dressing room used by cricketers at the Motibaug Ground.
Padhye completed the project in 2013 and was given partial payment. The association, however, refused to pay the pending amount saying that the decision to undertake the project was taken by the previous committee.
"The contractor had completed his work that was granted by the association. BCA refused to pay him the partial amount but it showed full payment in the income tax department and filed tax deductible at source (TDS) for it too. I argued in the court that the association has to honour its contract," said advocate Avadhoot Sumant who appeared on the behalf of Padhye.
BCA had earlier argued in the court that Padhye has to take charity commissioner's permission before taking legal steps as it is a registered trust. Padhye had filed case against BCA in June 2016. "The court on Thursday asked BCA to deposit Rs 11 lakh with the court before it defends itself," Sumant told TOI.
"We have deposited the amount in the court. Now we will wait for the final verdict," said Amul Jikar, BCA treasurer. The dressing room refurbishment project had become a centre of controversy after former BCCI and BCA secretary, Sanjay Patel, Sachin Dalvi and Arun Gandhi were accused of irregularities some years ago. The trio was accused of spending additional amount on the project without BCA managing committee's permission.
BCA had ordered an inquiry into the matter and the report stated that the trio spent much more funds on the refurbishment than the approved amount of Rs 27 lakh. The committee found Patel, Dalvi and Gandhi guilty of irregularity following which their BCA membership was terminated.
