The Haridwar police stepped up security for two doctors following the arrest of Rajbala — the mother of notorious gang leader, Sunil Rathi, who is now in jail.
Rajbala was arrested in connection with an extortion complaint by one doctor in Roorkee on Saturday.
Sources said in the name of Sunil Rathi, two doctors in the district were asked to pay a sum of Rs 50 lakh each.
On the basis of a complaint lodged by one of the doctors, police also lodged a case against Sunil Rathi.
In the meantime, the police have also tightened the security for the two doctors.
During the course of interrogation, the police came across the name of Rajbala. The police had then arrested the mother of Rathi from her main area of operation on Saturday.
They also arrested six persons -- in connection to the same case -- who were involved in creating ruckus at police station following the arrest of Rajbala.
After presenting them before the district court, six supporters of Rathi were sent to judicial custody. The police are also keeping a vigilant eye on the various known connections of Sunil Rathi.
Speaking to The Pioneer, the Superintendent of Police (rural), Manikant Mishra said, “We are on the constant look out for all the aides of Rathi and no one who is found guilty will be spared. One by one all his supporters are being identified. After the arrest of Rathi’s mother on Saturday, many supporters of Rathi had reached here from Uttar Pradesh. They created ruckus in the police line against the arrest.”
They also tried to free Rajbala from police custody so police had to register a case on Viru Rathi, Sachin, Gaurav Kumar, Digvijai Singh, Ankur and Dhirendra while others managed to escape. The police are also continuing their investigation of the known miscreants, he said.
