NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Friday settled the symbol row within Janata Dal (United) by recognising the group led by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar as the real party entitled to use its reserved symbol 'arrow'.
Rejecting the petition filed by 'rebel' JD(U) MLA from Gujarat and Sharad Yadav supporter Chhotubhai Vasava, claiming recognition as the real JD(U) under Paragraph 15 of the Elections Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) order, 1968, the EC in an order said the group led by Nitish "has demonstrated overwhelming support in the legislature wing as well as the majority in the national council of the party, which is the apex level organisation body of the party".
JD(U) national general secretary Sanjay Jha on Friday accused the Congress of trying to repeatedly prop up Sharad Yadav against Nitish Kumar. "This was a typical Congress gameplan. Even when the mahagathbandhan was in place, the Congress would instigate Yadav to rebel. The Congress was possibly feeling insecure about the growing stature of Nitish Kumar. The tacit Congress support to anti-Nitish camp came in the open when Congress leaders and lawyers argued on behalf of 'rebel' JD(U) group," he said.
The EC order on Friday came in the midst of Gujarat assembly poll.
