THE X-FILES season 11 has finally got an air date for the next season as Mulder and Scully return. Here is everything you need to know about the new series including release date, cast, plot and more.
When will season 11 of The X-Files air?
Fox has announced that the sci-fi cult classic will return on January 3, 2018 in the US.
There is no UK air date as yet but season 10 was aired on Channel 5 a couple of weeks after broadcast in America.
The news has already sent fans into meltdown and marks a return after season 10 aired in January 2016.

Who will be in the cast of The X-Files?
Gillian Anderson will be reprising her role as FBI agent and skeptic Dana Scully, while David Duchovny will be back as her UFO-chasing partner Fox Mulder.
Assistant Director Walter Skinner will be making a comeback and will be again played by Mitch Pileggi. The character was in the last season helping the two agents with reopen The X-Files.
Also, in the frame is William B. Davis as the villainous leader of the Syndicate and maybe Mulder's father the Cigarette Smoking Man - also known as Cancer Man.
Mulder and Scully could have company once more in the form of green, up-and-coming FBI agents Liz Einstein (played by Lauren Ambrose) and Kyd Miller (Robbie Amell).
They were in the last season and appeared to be an attempt to usher in a new era of creator Chris Carter's Nineties cult drama and test the waters for a reboot.
Annabeth Gish will be again donning her mantle as former FBI agent Monice Reyes.
Fan favourites The Lone Gunmen may make an appearance with Frohike (Tom Braidwood), Langley (Dean Haglund) and Byers (Bruce Harwood) assisting the dynamic duo once more.
The new series will feature guest stars Barbara Hershey, Haley Joel Osment and Karin Konoval.

How many episodes will there be in The X-Files season 11?
The last season had six episodes for its served as a limited edition run.
However, the new season will have a total of 10 episodes, Fox has confirmed.
Season 11 has been written by creator Chris Carter and Glen Morgan.
What will happen in The X-Files season 11?
There have been reports that the new run will focus more on individual cases rather than trying to tackle the overarching alien mythology which has become more convoluted over the years.
In fact, episode one of the season 10 premiere got a mixed reception from the critics for the ever complex conspiracy theory.
Writer Chris Carter told Den of Geek earlier this year: “I hope that [season 11] does what we did last time, which is that we're not resting on our laurels, that we are doing original material, that we are taking chances and risks.”

What happened in The X-Files season 10?
Season 10 consisted of six episodes that were a mix of mythology and one-off cases.
Each instalment had a different feel with horror, sci-fi and even comedic stories to reflect the broad range of tones of The X-Files during its original run.
The season ended with a mythology episode and an outbreak of the alien infection called the Spartan Virus.
Mulder was teetering on the verge of death after he was afflicted with the illness as Scully raced against time to come up with a cure using her own DNA that had been altered after she was abducted.
The very last scene saw an alien spaceship hovering over Mulder and Scully with a beam of white light shining down on them.
The X-Files season 11 airs on Fox on January 3, 2018.
