Ruth Davidson MOCKS painfully weak response to Sturgeon deputy's FMQs speech

SCOTTISH Tory leader Ruth Davidson took a savage dig at Sturgeon’s deputy following painfully half-hearted applause from the SNP.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney gave a speech about how Scotland would prepare for but received a pitifully poor applause from his fellow party members.

Speaking during First Minister Questions, a chuckling Ms Davidson branded the moment as “lacklustre”, which caused the chamber to erupt in laughter.

In response to Mr Swinney, Ms Davidson said: “It sounds to me like the Deputy First Minister isn't prepared to stick to that promise but let's give him another chance.

“Again, before the election in 2016, there was another promise. He was asked about what he’d say to local Government staff who were worried about their jobs.

“I say to those individuals that the Scottish National Party is determined, determined to protect their incomes, not punish them with a tax rise.”

Ms Davidson said that before the Scottish election in 2016 the SNP branded a tax as a punishment but they now see it as a virtue.

The Scottish Tory leader sparked an applause throughout the chamber when she said the SNP cannot stick to its promises.

Ms Davidson said: “Can the SNP explain why they say one thing when they needed votes and another once they had them?”

Nicola Sturgeon met with Prime Minister on Tuesday to discuss Brexit but the pair failed to reach an agreement.

Ms Sturgeon said the Withdrawal Bill needs to change “substantially” before Scotland can support the legislation.

The First Minister of Scotland described her meeting with Mrs May as “cordial” and “constructive”.

Speaking after talks at 10 Downing Street, Ms Sturgeon said: “We didn’t get to a point of agreement today, but we did get a better understanding of each other’s positions and I hope the Prime Minister has an understanding of the Scottish Government’s position."
