Kinnear - who took up his post in May in the wake of Andrea Radrizzani’s takeover - revealed the club’s strategy in a discussion about director of football Victor Orta.

Orta focused his efforts in the summer transfer window on European markets but has scouting teams targeting players closer to home.

And ’ latest signing - 16-year-old striker Ryan Edmondson from Yorkshire rivals York City - is a result of the Spaniard’s homegrown agenda.

Orta has come under fire from Leeds fans as a result of the team’s woeful form but Kinnear believes he is doing fine work behind the scenes.

“I think Victor’s done a couple of things and a lot of what we talk about is the medium and long term,” Kinnear told BBC Radio Leeds

“Victor has put in place a recruitment capability which is going to be a competitive advantage for Leeds United for many years to come.

It would be great to have an English and Yorkshire core to the team in the years to come

Leeds United managing director Angus Kinnear

“The reality is for Leeds to be competitive, particularly in the Championship when we’re competing with clubs with parachute payments, we have to be smarter, more insightful, more agile in the transfer market to secure the quality of players which are going to get us promoted.

“A lot of that work is unseen but over the next months and years we’re going to reap the rewards from that.

“I think that was demonstrated to an extent today with the , which is a direct result of one of Victor’s strategies which is to have a team specifically focused on English talent and specifically focused on talent from Yorkshire on the basis that Yorkshire has proven to be one of the richest talent pools in the country.

“We want to focus on that with an understanding that it would be great to have an English and Yorkshire core to the team in the years to come.”
