New 'Psychology Today' Editorial: Recovery from Addiction Doesn't Stop After Formal Treatment - It's Just Beginning

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif: A new Psychology Today editorial reveals details that the arc of addiction treatment doesn't end at discharge, but from that addiction treatment is not completed when their treatment program ends, but rather is just entering a new stage, that of recovery management.

These services are necessary for patients long after discharge, according to the article "Recovery Doesn't Stop After Treatment Ends, Continuing Care is Key," which was written by Sovereign Health founder and CEO Tonmoy Sharma, M.B.B.S., M.Sc. In the article, Dr. Sharma notes how instead of treating addiction and mental illnesses with episodic care, treatment centers should be treating these disorders in the same way one treats asthma, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic conditions.

"In behavioral health, recovery management is provided to patients after they complete formal treatment," Dr. Sharma writes. "It may consist of education, motivational interviewing and cognitive behavior strategies that aim to help patients make progress toward their goals in recovery." He adds, "Within a recovery management framework, professionals must help patients learn how to manage and take responsibility for their conditions."

Recovery from mental illnesses, substance abuse or co-occurring disorders (e.g., having both a mental and substance use disorder) is a complicated and long-term process. As an effort to reduce relapse and help patients achieve long-term recovery.

"Recovery management is an important component of the treatment and recovery process because it empowers patients to understand their condition," Dr. Sharma writes, "and teaches them how to cope with triggers and stress manage their symptoms in time of crisis and distress. In addition to these benefits, continuing care services, also referred to as aftercare, can be provided to patients to reduce their risk of relapse and rehospitalization after they receive treatment," says Dr. Sharma in this article.
