BERHAMPUR: A paramedical student of MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur was critically injured after her husband allegedly poured acid on her on Thursday.

Police said the victim Minati Pradhan (20), a final year diploma student in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) received severe burn injuries on her face, chest area and her left eye.

Police said, “Minati was on her way to attend class when husband Niranjan Pradhan, who had kept a watch on her, threw acid and fled the spot. As she screamed in pain onlookers rushed her to the emergency ward.” Niranjan has been absconding since then.

Minati, a native of Barida village under Kabisuryanagar police limits, had married Niranjan of Polasara area on May 7. Her father Bipin Pradhan alleged she was being tortured mentally and physically for dowry since her marriage.

In fact, two months ago, a complaint was lodged against Niranjan regarding the same and the case is currently under investigation. Minati had left her in-laws’ home following the ordeal and was staying in a private hostel in the city.

The twenty-year-old woman has since been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack as her condition deteriorated. Police have registered a case and initiated a probe.
