Peaky Blinders season 5 release date, cast, plot: When is the new series released?

PEAKY BLINDERS season 5 was commissioned by the BBC last year at the same time as the fourth season. With the show made its return to the BBC last night, here is everything you need to know about series 5 including the release date, trailer and latest news.

When does Peaky Blinders season 5 start on the BBC?

Peaky Blinders season five has not yet got a release date and the scripts are still yet to be written for the new episodes.

The air dates for previous seasons has varied from September, October, November and May.

There is no trailer at the moment but it is likely that once filming gets underway, fans could get some snippets from the set of the drama.

Steve Knight, who created the BBC drama, told Express.co.uk exclusively: “It’s in my head, it’s not the best place for it to be. So I’m going to start writing that very soon and we will start shooting it next year. We will start shooting in the autumn.”

The BBC show will be in production for a year and fans will have to wait a little while for the next season.

Knight added: “It will be the normal turn around, it would be [airing in] spring of 2019.”

What will happen in Peaky Blinders season 5?

Knight declined to give any details about what will happen in season five, saying: “I don’t want to give away how series four ends because it’s going to go in a particular direction.”

His words suggest that there will be a big plot development in the season four finale that could change the course of the drama.

On the season four finale of the BBC series, Knight said: “Hopefully it will end in a way that is expected and of course set up season five but not in a way that anyone will be looking for.”

Who will be in the cast of Peaky Blinders season 5?

Depending on how Peaky Blinders season four pans out, the ensemble cast are likely to be back again for the next run which seems likely to comprise of six more episodes.

The Peaky Blinders cast have been part of the show pretty much since the beginning and so it's likely that most of the actors will be back with Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, Helen McCrory as Aunt Polly, Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby, Finn Cole as Michael Gray, Joe Cole as John Shelby, Natasha O’ Keeffe as Lizzie Stark and Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Esme Shelby, and Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby.

It is not known whether Tom Hardy will return as rival London mafia godfather Alfie Solomons but he’s a fan-favourite and could make a comeback.

Much like the previous seasons, there will most likely be some big names attached to Peaky Blinders season five.

Oscar winner Adrien Brody and Game of Thrones actor Aidan Gillen will be featuring in season four and play a pivotal part in the story.

Will Peaky Blinders return for season 6?

There is no word yet whether there will be a Peaky Blinders season six, however given the show’s popularity it looks likely to be renewed for another run.

Knight explained: “I’ve always had a pretty clear road map of how this works between World War One and World War Two, and it’s flexible in that you can get to the destination quicker or slower.

"So in may mind it’s probable that we’ll get there at the end of series five, it may be series six.”

On whether season six would definitely happen, the writer explained: “It’s possible, the momentum of this show is quite extraordinary in that it seems to be getting bigger and more popular and there seems to be more energy with each one.

“So none of us want to shortchange it, so if we feel that after five there’s another one - there’s talk of a film and all sorts of things - so we just want to do justice to the people who love it.”

He said that he knew from the beginning how the programme and the story of the Shelby family would come to an end.

“I want it to end with the first air raid siren in Birmingham in the Second World War, so that will be the start of the next chapter in British history. It’s that period,” Knight added.

Peaky Blinders season 4 will air on BBC Two on Wednesdays at 9pm.
