Tirupur North Police have arrested K. Arulmani (21) of Athur, Salem, on charges of stealing the car of his owner Karthikeyan.
The Police said that Arulmani, who worked as driver, drove down the car on November 11 to Gobichettipalayam and disappeared thereafter.
He did not respond to Karthikeyan’s calls either. Failing to locate Arulmani, Karthikeyan lodged a complaint, based on which they registered a case, tracked down Arulmani to Tiruchengode and arrested him.
Nurses stage protest
Nurses working at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital staged a protest on the hospital campus on Wednesday. Sources said that the nurses wanted the hospital administration to fill up vacancies at the earliest.
They pointed out to Dean Asokan that of the 800-odd posts in the hospital, there were only 265 nurses, who had to dispose of medical waste as well.
After the Dean promised to take it to the notice of senior officials, the nurses withdrew the protest. Nearly 100 nurses participated.
Man injured in
elephant attack
Suresh Kumar (33), a construction worker hailing from Salem, was injured in an elephant attack at IOB Colony, Vadavalli, on Wednesday. According to sources, when Suresh left his work place, a construction site, to a nearby vacant plot to attend to nature’s call, a female elephant attacked him.
Commuters who were waiting at a nearby bus stop saw the incident and alerted an emergency ambulance service that rushed him to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The elephant was with a calf.
Man detained
Race Course Police on Wednesday detained Ayyappan (25), a resident of Singanallur, who had threatened immolation in front of the Collectorate.
After failing to convince his wife to live with him and being chided by his father-in-law, Ayyappan had posted in a social networking site that he would committ suicide in front of the Collectorate. His relatives who saw the status update, alerted the Police, who with the help of his profile picture, nabbed him when he neared the Collectorate.
Sanitary inspector
stages protest
Pichai Mani (52), a sanitary inspector attached to ward 40, staged a protest at the civic body’s main office in Town Hall. He said though he had been promoted on seniority, he was being denied the position and also the commensurate wage. Condemning the denial of the new position, he said he would fast unto death. Senior officials said they were engaged in talks with him.
Religious place vandalised
A place of worship was vandalised at Akkarai Sengappalli near Annur.
The incident came to light on Tuesday night when visitors to the place went there to check why light was not glowing. They found the door broken open, papers scattered, ceiling fan damaged and a few electronic items missing. Based on a complaint from the members of the community, the Annur Police have registered a case.
