EU expansion: Bulgarian PM heralds WESTERN BALKANS as next EU target after Brexit

BULGARIA’S prime minister has urged Brussels chiefs to allow more Balkan countries to join the European Union as the bloc prepares for Britain’s exit.

Could the Western Balkans countries replace Britain in the EU?

Speaking in Italy following a meeting with Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni, Bojko Borissov admitted concerns about the bloc’s future after Brexit and believes some of the Western Balkan countries would be a welcome addition to the bloc.

He said: “Regarding Brexit, the negotiation is arduous. I'm not optimistic.

“I do not know how it is going to end, and that is why we are proposing the Balkans as an alternative.

“We have a common desire and will to bring this discussion forward for the balance of EU countries.”

The Western Balkans region includes Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania – all of which are contenders for EU accession.

Mr Borissov is keen for the EU to develop closer relations with Eastern Europe given Bulgaria’s bilateral ties with nations in the region.

He said: "We have introduced the theme of the Western Balkans in Trieste and made a commitment that at the forthcoming EU summit on 17 May, on the Western Balkans, we should make the most of the other six states in the region to make a step forward in this direction, there is still much to do.”

Next year Bulgaria will take on Presidency of the Council of the European Union

According to the Bulgarian leader, the challenges for the Western Balkans are related to infrastructure development, the revival of youth policies and the projects required for better connectivity in the region, which include the European rail corridor number 8.

He believes the improved transport links will provide economic opportunities for the EU.

Mr Borissov continued: ”This is a very important project, along with those related to ports at airports and railways, there is no EU risk, but investment opportunities.”

He also hoped that with Italy’s help, it will be possible to "secure a culture of knowledge of the region”.

He said: “20 years ago we lived many conflicts like that of Kosovo, but now I am optimistic about the goals of stability in the region.”
