Warm winter breaks more affordable than you think

A DOSE of winter sun may be more affordable than you think as an “unprecedented” holiday price war has slashed the cost of escaping wet and windy Britain.

The price of a holiday to Las Vegas has dropped by a third

Demand has fallen with cash-strapped Britons staying at home to count the pennies and travel companies have responded by slashing prices by up to 56 per cent to entice them to change their minds.

Prices are now at levels last seen in 1995, an incredible 22 years ago, according to research from TravelSupermarket.com.

A search on the site shows a two-night city break in Cologne with rooms now costs from £59 per person or seven nights in Malta from around £89, although prices change all the time.

Brits can really make their budgets stretch

Long-haul costs have also plummeted with prices in key US destinations such as Florida and Las Vegas down more than a third.

High-fliers can escape to Orlando for seven nights including a three-star hotel room from £352 each, departing from Manchester on January 17, while a week in Miami starts from £500.

Other top deals include a week in a three-star hotel in St Petersburg, Russia, for £247 departing Heathrow on December 10, or £433 for seven nights at a three-star in Dubai departing Heathrow on January 17.

Prices have also fallen sharply in the Maldives and Fez in Morocco.

TravelSupermarket spokeswoman Emma Coulthurst said emerging city and beach destinations are competing hard to win business from established tourist hotspots and low-cost airlines are squeezing prices.

“Brits can really make their budgets stretch,” she added.
