SNDL files complaint against BJP workers for creating ruckus

Nagpur: Angry over revelation of their names for non-payment of power bills, some Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) corporators and their supporters created ruckus at SNDL's Chhapru Nagar office on Wednesday. They beat up an officer and smashed a few plastic chairs. Many citizens slammed the corporators, stating that instead of clearing their pending bills, they were resorting to "hooliganism".

SNDL lodged a complaint with Lakadganj police against BJP corporators for assaulting its officer and destroying its property. Cops said they are looking into the complaint. Meanwhile, BJP corporator Vandana Yangatwar has lodged a complaint against SNDL on behalf of several corporators for misbehaving with them at Chhapru Nagar office.

TOI and Maharashtra Times had published the names of 26 corporators, most of them from the BJP, who had not paid their power bills since a few months. This infuriated the corporators who contacted former mayor Pravin Datke.

The BJP leader first went with some BJP workers to SNDL office on Tuesday evening and gheraoed general manager (commercial) Dharmendra Patil for two hours. They demanded the name of the person who had provided the list to the newspapers. Patil told them that the names were not provided by SNDL.

The list of defaulting corporators was published by another local daily on Wednesday. This further infuriated the BJP leaders and over 100 activists led by Datke reached SNDL's Chhapru Nagar office. They demanded that SNDL business head Sonal Khurana accompany them to TOI-MT office and reveal the 'truth'.

While waiting for Khurana, an altercation broke out between an SNDL's GM (corporate affairs) Swapnendu Kabi and some BJP workers. The workers first pushed him around and then hit him with a plastic chair. The activists later smashed a few plastic chairs to vent their anger.

Later, Khurana, who was in MSEDCL office, reached TOI-MT office along with Datke. The former mayor told TOI-MT that SNDL had provided the names of some corporators who had paid their power bills. "The SNDL list contains the name of Vidya Kanhere, who has paid her bills. A defaulter of the same name lives in Mahal and SNDL has interchanged the names," he said.

However, later when TOI checked the address of Kanhere, it was the same as mentioned in the list.

Sushma Chaudhari, whose names figures in the list with a default of Rs2.7 lakh, said that her husband was a defaulter and it was wrong to publish her name. "You should have published the name of my husband and not mine," she added.

SNDL officials said that they were under political pressure not to disconnect power connections of corporators.
