Peaky Blinders season 3 recap: What happened to Tommy Shelby? A look back before season 4

PEAKY BLINDERS season 4 hit our screens last as fans were reunited with the famous Birmingham gangster family. But what happened to Tommy Shelby in series 3

The BBC drama created by Steve Knight has built up a loyal fanbase in both the UK and America thanks to its slick production values and gritty storylines.

Knight has already warned that fans should "expect the unexpected", hinting that nothing is going to be straightfoward.

Season four is going to be followed up by season five which Knight has revealed that he's working on at the moment.

He has not yet written the next season, however he has plotted it all out and knows the direction he'll be taking it in.

Production is expected to get underway on Peaky Blinders season five next year.

But there will be a bit of a wait for the next run which is not slated for transmission until 2019.

Season four will see Cillian Murphy reprising his role as the quiet but deadly head of the mafia clan as he oversees operations and plans to make their family business a legitimate enterprise.

Game of Thrones star Aidan Gillen and Oscar winner Adrien Brody will also be featuring in season four of Peaky Blinders, which is known to have some big names in each run.

There is set to be plenty more drama befalling the Shelbys as they tread a fine line with the law and try to grow their company.

Season four will see the ensemble cast back again but in very different circumstances compared to the lavish lifestyle of the previous run.

However, before we get to the new season, here’s our Peaky Blinders season three recap.

What happened to Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders season 3?

In the Peaky Blinders season three finale, Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) revealed that there was an arrest warrant for the whole family before a swarm of officers descended on the house and arrested everyone.

As chaos ensued all around him, Tommy tried to assure them that he’d explain everything would be fine.

He told his angry relatives that he’d made an agreement that would save them, saying: “The people that we betrayed last night, they want to bring us down.

“Now, they control the police, they control the judges, they control the juries, they control the jail. But they do not control the elected government.

“I have made a deal in return for giving evidence against them. It’s all taken care of.”

Tommy added: “I’ve made a deal with people even more powerful than our enemies, trust me.”

He explained that they would get their money in “due course”, suggesting that he was confident they would be getting out of prison.

The very last scene saw Tommy sitting alone at his desk in his study after his family had been taken away by the police, following the arrest warrant issued by the Chief Constable of Birmingham.

Tommy was pretty much the only member of the Shelby clan not to have been hauled in by the police.

What happened in Peaky Blinders season 3?

Peaky Blinders season three was filled with plenty of action and drama that kicked off with the wedding of Tommy to his long-time love Grace Burgess (Annabelle Wallis).

However, the marriage was short-lived after she was killed accidentally in a revenge attack by the Italian mafia don Vicente Changretta (Kenneth Colley).

Grace’s death sent Tommy reeling and he went to Wales to dispose of the supposedly cursed sapphire he’d given to his wife shortly before her death.

He bestowed the precious stone on a gypsy woman and was freed of his burden for Grace’s cold-blooded murder.

The Italians were later attacked in a reprisal by the Peaky Blinders in which Vincente was bumped off and his son Angel was brutal beaten before getting shot dead while in his hospital bed.

The season also saw the Peaky Blinders going into business with the Russians, in particular Leon Petrovich Romanov (Jan Bijvoet) with whom he agreed to help move artillery vehicles in exchange for a large sum of money.

As part of the plan the Peaky Blinders agreed to blow up a train - thought to contain the artillery - as a decoy while the goods were secretly exported out of the country.

However, Tommy later backed out of the plan and decided to rob the Russians instead when he found out that they would not keep to their side of the bargain.

To add to the mix, the Brummie gangsters were caught up with Father Hughes (Paddy Considine), who worked for both the White Russians and the British crown but also reported his dealings to the communists or Red Russians.

Father Hughes was hoping to provoke an attack on British soil so that would allow the British to sever ties with the communists. He was furious when he learnt that Tommy planned to betray the Russians and had the mafia head nearly killed off.

The priest then blackmailed Tommy into doing his bidding by kidnapping his son Charlie and threatened to kill him unless Tommy blew up the train.

In the end Tommy had Father Hughes killed and got his son Charlie back safely in an elaborate plan of deception.

He also successfully robbed the Russians with the help of Leon’s daughter Tatiana Petrovna (Gaite Jansen), whom he had a fling with following Grace’s death.

The Peaky Blinders got the spoils from the heist but it wasn’t the happy ending they were expecting after they were arrested.
