UK weather WARNING: Heavy fog to cause commuter CHAOS as traffic collisions close roads

HEAVY fog across parts of the UK is set to cause commuter chaos as several roads are already closed due to traffic collisions.

Frosty temperatures and fog are forecast to cause a “gloomy” start to Wednesday for the UK.

Met Office Aiden McGivern warns of negative temperatures in the morning for Scotland with thick cloud over the West of England and Wales.

Mr McGivern said: “Clearing skies over Scotland through the night will lead to frosty temperatures by the morning.

“We have already had a lot of mist and murk especially over the hills of western England and Wales through the day and if anything that will thicken and lower through the night.

“Even where we have breaks in the cloud, especially through the Midlands, East Anglia and the south-east, temperatures will fall away and fog will form – dense fog in some place.

Frosty temperatures and fog are forecast to cause a gloomy start to Wednesday for the UK

“It will be a gloomy start to Wednesday morning, some dense fog patches causing some problems, I suspect on the roads first thing.

“That fog will be slow to clear particularly through parts of the Midlands, East Anglia and the southeast.”

Northern Ireland and Scotland will have a “pleasant day” with temperatures rising in the afternoon before being ruined by downpours into the night and into early Thursday morning.

The Met Office forecasters said: “Bright and dry in the north but with rain and strong winds in the far northwest later.

“Cloudy and damp further south and east, with fog patches slow to clear.

“Turning brighter in the afternoon, especially in the west.

“Windy in the north with a band of rain travelling southeastwards followed by blustery showers.

“Mainly cloudy further south with hill fog and patchy rain developing, especially in the west.”

Weather models on WxCharts also suggest a chance of snow in northern Scotland.

Some forecasters have warned that UK is set for two months of heavy snow and blizzards as Arctic winds sweep the nation.

Winter storms will whip up blizzards leaving parts of the country under three feet of snow by Christmas, according to some forecasters, they claim.

Severe delays have been sparked on the M20 eastbound entry slip at junction J10 after an overturned vehicle has forced all lanes to be closed.

According to Highways England, normal traffic conditions will not resume until 6am.

Between J10 and J11 a traffic collision has also closed all lanes and normal traffic conditions are not expected to resume until 10am.

Another traffic collision on the M1 northbound between junctions J20 and J21 has forced two lane closures and delays are expected until at least 8am.
