CHENNAI: A woman attempted suicide here on Monday after a police inspector allegedly verbally abused her and took away valuables from her house.

The family said the police first came to the house saying a second-hand phone used by Mythili’s 17-year-old nephew (name withheld) had been stolen from someone.

Mythili V, a 40-year-old widow was staying at Korukkupet with her sister Uma (43), also a widow and the latter’s two sons.

Uma’s elder son (booked by police in cellphone theft), had recently bought a second-man mobile from friends. “What he did not know is that the mobile that he bought was a stolen one,” said K Thenraj, a friend of the family and an advocate.

On Monday, a team of police personnel led by inspector Jawahar allegedly came to the woman’s house in connection with the alleged theft.

A suicide note written by Mythili said the police had accused her of amassing all her household objects through ‘theft’.

The note also alleged that the police not only used abusive language but left the house after taking `37,000 and three sovereigns of gold that they claimed were stolen despite Mythili and her sister showing proof of purchase.

She was rushed to the hospital and shifted from the Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday evening to the general ward.
