KwaZulu-Natal – Five people were killed and four others injured when two vehicles collided near Shongweni, outside Durban, on Wednesday, paramedics said.
Rescue Care Paramedics spokesperson Ceron Lennox said paramedics were called to the scene just after 17:00 and found "absolute carnage" when they arrived.
"Multiple patients were scattered on the roadway and some people entrapped in the wreckage."
Lennox said two vehicles had appeared to have T-boned.
"Paramedics found five people, three males and two females, with no signs of life unfortunately and were declared dead on scene due to their extensive injuries."
Specialised equipment was used to free four others from the wreckage.
Advanced life support paramedics were called to stabilise the injured until they were freed.
They were then rushed to the nearest hospital.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
