NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Film Certification is yet to certify the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed Rajput saga Padmavati, a CBFC member has said.

“All protests happening are based on speculation. The board has not seen a single sequence or a frame of the movie,” a CBFC member said. Bhansali’s team filed for certification of the film online only last weekend and viewing of the film by the examining committee and reviewing committees will happen soon, he added. CBFC is expected to take a call on the movie after this.

Officials, however, said the delay in submitting the film for certification has added to the problem as CBFC guidelines stipulate that a film has to be submitted for certification 61 days before release.

“Some filmmakers keep working on post-production work and approach CBFC for a certificate 4-5 days before the release date. That increases the complexity of the situation,” a member added. Over 50 activists of Rajput Karni Sena vandalised a cinema hall and a mall in Kota after the film’s trailer was screened there on Tuesday.

Padmavati was embroiled in several controversies after speculation that there was a dream sequence showing Rani Padmini and Alauddin Khilji. Though Bhansali has clarified there was no such sequence some have raised objections over a song available online. During the shooting of the film at Jaipur’s Jaigarh Fort, Bhansali was attacked and the film’s sets vandalised. He had then released a video where he claimed there was nothing objectionable in the film.

According to BJP insiders, over the last few days Bhansali has been meeting several political leaders or requested appointments. “But there is a thinking among many in the party that the course of correcting history has to begin soon. Mainstream media is powerful and there needs to be responsibility to see that one kind of narrative doesn’t get celebrated as history or truth. Just because a woman was an object of a brutal invader’s fantasy, doesn’t mean that it can be art,” a BJP member said.

Shri Rajput Karni Sena on Wednesday called for a nationwide bandh on December 1 against the release of the film which it said had “distorted facts and presented queen Padmavati in bad light.” VHP, Bajarang Dal and Hindu Janajagruti Sena are among groups protesting against release of the movie.

The chairperson of the Rajasthan State Commission for Women, Suman Sharma, has written to CBFC asking for screening of the film for members of the Rajput community. Former chairman of ICHR, Y Sudarshan Rao, said artists and filmmakers cannot take the liberty of fictionalising history and presenting it to the mainstream.
