PUNE: A 39-year-old worker died after falling from a height of 40 feet while putting up a hoarding on a frame at Kate Vasti in Punavale on Monday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Machhindra Ashru Mandage. The Hinjewadi police arrested the contractor, Sanjay Wagh, under Section 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code on Tuesday.

"We have arrested Wagh as he had not provided any safety gear to the workers who were putting up the hoarding," assistant inspector NS Nyamane said. The officer said Wagh and Mandage, originally from Latur district, were staying in Kondhwa. Wagh had received the contract of putting up hoardings in Kate Vasti in Punavale. "The workers had built up the 40ft iron frame for the hoarding. On Monday morning, Mandage and other workers had climbed on the frame for putting up the hoarding," Nyamane said.

He said the contractor had not provided safety gear to any of the workers. "Mandage fell after losing his balance. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared him dead on arrival," the officer said.

Nitin Pawar, general secretary of Bandhkam Majdoor Sabha, said contractors never bother about the security of their workers. "In many cases, the workers are not provided any safety gear," he alleged. Pawar said a worker recently died after falling from an under-construction building in the city. "When our members visited the site, they found that the contractor had not appointed even security supervisor at the site," he said, adding that the labourers working at high-rise hoardings should be provided with safety gear.

Pawar said that he and his team are working to create awareness about the safety of workers.
