VADODARA: City-based Sterling Cancer Hospital on Tuesday organised a blood cancer survivor meet to mark Children's Day.
The children who have survived cancer along with their parents were felicitated by the hospital during a function where the parents shared the stories on how their wards emerged as survivors in the battle against cancer.
"Battling blood cancer can be extremely tormenting and emotionally disturbing. It can be physically taxing and mentally devastating for both the patient and family," said Dr Seema Bhatwadekar, consultant clinical haematologist and BMT physician at Sterling Hospital, Vadodara.
According to Bhatwadwekar, 1.5 to 1.8 world population is affected by different kinds of cancer. Amongst, all the cancers, 14 to 15 % patients are suffering from blood cancer.
"In India, too, blood cancer is reported in 14 to 15 % of patients suffering from cancer. Of these, nearly 20 % patients are children," she said, adding that if blood cancer is diagnosed early, it can be completely cured.
"Unlike adults, the success rate of curing children suffering from blood cancer is very high. In fact, the cure rate is more than 95 % if cancer is diagnosed early. But there needs to be more awareness on this front," she added.
