When music was created from a billion-year-old rock

PANAJI: A convergence of stars, science, music and art beautifully met in a melodious magic as scientists and artists made music from a one billion year-old meteorite rock.

Named 'Satellite Sonata', this musical endeavour was performed at the inaugural of the 'Story of Space' festival at the Kala Academy on Friday.

"The meteorite has been strategically cut to create a sound. The harmonies that we are playing have been transformed to match the dynamics of the stars. Thus, creating music according to the frequency of the stars," said Santiago Girelli.

Girelli, a faculty member at the Goa University, is accompanying Swiss artist Robin Meier, in orchestrating the performance along with five other musicians, dressed in street band costumes, to informalize the musical. They used their flute, tuba, clarinet and trumpets to lend sound to Meier. The rock is therefore the fifth instrument in this ratio. Meier played the meteorite with a violin bow and brushes.

"It's a very interesting example of what this festival is about; exploration, learning, breaking the limits and a new experience of reunderstanding arts," Girelli added.

The festival will explore space from the point of nothingness to the point of infinity. Speaking about the event, counsul general from the Italian embassy, Stefania Costanza said, "It is a great gathering. Space can be whatever we might think it is, but we need to listen to different points of view. Sharing the space is what the artists are doing at this festival. This is one way in which India and Italy can build relations."

"It is important to acknowledge a festival that stands for content and passion and not commercialization and politics. It's a festival that speaks and makes you think and that is the kind of event we need in Goa," said Sanjith Rodrigues.

There are participants from several countries and the festival has 75 installations spread across Goa for people to engage into.

Some of the key highlights of the festival are installations on the physics of space by Jan Swierkowski, who will take attendees through the evolution of stars and the science of space in his installation.
