GUWAHATI: Assam Police is set to file the charge sheet in the cash-for-job scam in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) within a month. 22 officers serving in the Assam Civil Service (ACS), Assam Police Service (APS) and allied services are currently in police custody and three other accused have been declared as absconders.
A lookout notice has been issued in the state to nab these three absconders identified as Rumi Saikia, Nishamoni Deka and Rakesh Gupta.
"We have taken a different route in this case. Instead of starting the process of collecting evidence after arresting the accused, the usual line in other cases, we have first collected all the evidence and then went for their arrest. The charge sheet will be in court in next 30 to 40 days," a source said.
The 22 accused are in 14 days police custody and investigators are trying find any further leads in the scam through interrogation.
The investigators claim that every evidence required to pin the accused in the court have been collected. The evidence includes the answer scripts of these accused which allegedly were fake as established by forensic tests.
"Some of the accused have partially admitted having committed wrong but their statements do not count as evidence in the court. We want to know from them if there are more officials in the APSC involved in the scam. Also if any more agents through who the bribes were paid," the source added.
"This is not just about punishing few people but what we are looking is the repairing the social fabric of the state that has been run over by such nefarious acts," the source said. So far, three agents including an engineer serving under the state government, have been arrested.
Police are not looking for any government approver among the 25 accused. "If anyone among them willingly wants to be an approver, we will not deny it but we are not really running after them to become an approver," the source added.
