Cruise cabin crew have secret code words which allow them to speak about the passengers on board.

Using terms that only other crew members can understand, they are able to insult cruise guests without letting on they are doing so.

Meanwhile, the ship's crew, which include waiters and bar staff, maintain the air of good customer service.

One common phrase for those in the know includes "banana".

If a member of the crew calls a passenger a banana, it means they are a particularly bad tipper. 

The secret was revealed on the Cruise Bulletin from Cruise.co.uk.

It is no surprise this would rile crew members, who are generally paid very little.

For many of these workers, tips and gratuity make up a substantial part of their wages.

It is also true that ship crew work very long shifts onboard.

Often they only have a few hours in between shifts, in order to nap, eat and relax.

On a lot of cruises, crew members don't even get a full day off. 

This means their work equates to a lot more than a 40 hour week

Cruise ship crew aren't the only staff who have coded insults.

Disney employees also have a secret code, according to a former staff member.

The ex Disney employee recently revealed on Reddit that the phrase "Have a magical Disney day" is actually a coded phrase.

It actually mean "f*** you", they claimed.
