PUNE: Unidentified thieves stole cash, ornaments and valuables, totally worth Rs 3 lakh, from three unsuspecting commuters on board PMPML buses in Swargate and Camp on Sunday afternoon.
Two of the incidents occurred in areas under the Swargate police. Two similar thefts had taken place on Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) buses on Saturday — one at Swargate and another on Pune-Satara road.
The frequent thefts are exposing the lack of security of commuters availing of civic transport buses, considering that similar instances have been reported in the recent past with the police finding little success in nabbing the suspects.
"We are planning surprise checks on PMPML buses as one of the steps to check such thefts. We have decided to secure better coordination between various police stations to nab the suspects. Such coordination is necessary as the buses frequently pass through the jurisdiction of one police station to another," deputy commissioner of police (Zone-II) Pravind Mundhe said on Monday.
Similarly, the staffers at the Dattawadi, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Swargate and other police stations have been asked to move around PMPML buses in plain clothes to identify suspects involved in theft and robbery on buses.
The Dattawadi police arrested Tara Gaikwad (45), Rukhmini Jadhav (45) and Sunanda Jadhav (50), all residents of Sarvodayanagar in Mundhwa, for stealing Rs 2,000 from the purse of a woman, Dipti Dalvi (28) of Hingne. She was travelling on a PMPML bus near Swargate.
On Saturday, Ujwala Dhalpe (26) of Karvenagar lodged a complaint with the Swargate police station stating that unidentified persons stole her purse containing ATM cards and others valuables on a PMPML bus. The suspects swiped her card and withdrew Rs 17,500 the same day before she could lodge a complaint with the police.
On Sunday afternoon, Archana Mahesh Jadhav (32) of Pingle Vasti near Hadapsar lodged a complaint with the Cantonment police stating that some unidentified persons stole her bag containing gold ornaments and cash totally worth Rs 1.45 lakh. She was in a bus heading for Pulgate from Camp.
Ushan Bhujbal (60) of Shukrawar Peth lodged a complaint with Swargate police station stating that unidentified persons stole her bag containing cash and jewellery worth Rs 32,000 when she was travelling on a bus towards Bajirao road from Swargate on Sunday.
Another woman, Mussarat Ashfaq Sarguroh (36) of Nerul near Kalyan, lodged a police complaint saying her bag containing cash and jewellery worth Rs 1.27 lakhs was stolen when the bus she was travelling in was reaching the Swargate area.
