Local artistes regale with life humour

NAGPUR: Tickling the funny bone of some forty-odd members of the audience at Ashok Hall of Chitnavis Centre were five stand up comedians performing in a show 'The Puntastic Paanch'.

Curated by event developer Sachin Phadkar, the show was an effort to provide a platform to local talent and also to create a taste for these humorous acts.

Sticking to the standard outlines and content, the performers made a good enough attempt to regale the audience and even succeeded in evoking laughter. The first to perform was Anil Mishra, who after declaring that he hailed from Uttar Pradesh, went on to take digs at the booming population of the north Indian state.

Paras Batra, who gives performances in the city and outside too, followed next and went on to establish a connect with the audience through their schools and the local lingo coined there.

Regaling the audience with his jokes about a student whose mother was his class teacher, Vinay Tiwari's content had freshness and wit to it. Akash Singh and Yash Chaudhary too established their UP connect to give the audience a context for their jokes.

Stand up acts are irreverent takes on everyday situations. Picking up on subjects which touch the common people, the content gives a glimpse of the current trends.

"These acts have been confined mostly to open mic being organized with an increasing frequency in the city. We are encouraged by the response which we got today though I must admit it took us by surprise," Phadkar said by way of explaining the austere set up of the show.

"There was no music and no fillers, besides we were performing too close to the audience which was a kind of distraction for us," felt Akash Singh.

"It was for the first time that in the city people paid up to hear local artiste and I am very happy about it. People watch these acts on YouTube and we just want to show them that people here can do it too," Paras Batra said.

Finding the content original and refreshing, Arijit Khandelwal, an engineering student said, "It was a very novel show and we all could relate to it as they tried to localize the jokes by bringing in local flavours and elements."
