Coimbatore: Krishnampathy lake bund near Seeranaickenpalayam Road resembles a dump yard with the civic body failing to crack the whip on violators, who dispose of construction debris on roadside.
The civic body had cleaned up the entire stretch located near Krishnampathy lake last week. But, the entire stretch is back to its old condition, strewn with construction debris and garbage.
When contacted, corporation officials said they would ban heavy vehicles on the stretch, if the problem persists. "We may even employ a watchman to ensure that it is not repeated," said an official.
"We had caught two trucks dumping construction debris and fined them 5,000 each. We had also warned the drivers and made them clean up the place. But, people continue to dispose of waste in the area. Trucks mostly come after midnight to dump the waste. It is difficult to track them," the official added.
On Saturday, TOI spotted auto-rickshaws dumping construction debris on the stretch. When talked to them, some of the offenders said they were not the only ones dumping waste there. "We came here for the first time. Seeing the waste already dumped here, we thought it was an area earmarked by the civic body to dispose of construction debris. The corporation neither sends trucks nor sanitary workers to clear the waste. Where do we dump them?" asked an auto driver.
Environmentalists, meanwhile, cautioned against disposal of waste along the tank bund, saying it would affect the fauna and flora in the region. "It causes a loss of habitat for birds, insects and reptiles," they said.
The town planning officer, Ravichandran, said he would also look into the issue and take steps to clean the lake bunds. "We have already issued work orders for setting up construction and debris waste treatment plant. Once that becomes functional, this problem will be solved. Until then, we can only warn or penalize the violators," he said.
