Pimpri Chinchwad: The state government has told the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to share the cost of prize money of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world tour event, with Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), scheduled to be held in January at the Shiv Chattrapati Shivaji Balewadi stadium in Pune.

PCMC would pay Rs1 crore over five years towards the prize money. Besides, the state government would spend around Rs16 crore for the ATP tournament.

The event was being held in Chennai for the past 21 years. Known as the "Chennai Open", it had drawn top players from across the world. The tournament would now be called "Maharashtra Open". The ATP event is organized in 28 cities across the world.

Many world class tennis players like Boris Becker, Pat Rafter, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Moya, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohan Bopanna, Somdev Devvrman, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni have participated in the tournament so far.

While the MMRDA would contribute a certain amount towards the prize money, other government and semi-government institutions would also share a part of the expenses. The Pune Municipal Corporation would contribute towards the prize money for the ATP 250 series event.

In February this year, a Davis Cup match was organized by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association, and Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal corporations at the Shiv Chattrapati Balewadi Complex.
