PATNA : Patna University (PU) vice-chancellor Rash Bihari Prasad Singh has expressed satisfaction over high enrolment of girls in different courses. "It is a matter of pride that more than 60% of the students enrolled in different courses in PU are girls," he said, adding that PU is not only empowering the girl students but also fulfilling the dreams of great visionary and educationist Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who advocated for promoting girls' education.
Presiding over the National Education Day celebrations organized by PU at Wheeler Senate House to mark the birth anniversary of Azad here on Saturday, the VC said Maulana Azad, the first education minister of independent India, had earlier opposed the partition of India and fought for a united country.
PU history teacher Daisy Narain eulogized the valuable contribution of Azad in the national freedom movement and observed that he realized the power of education in ensuring all-round development of the country and laid down the foundation of a sound education system. Azad was against privatization of education and advocated for universalization of elementary and secondary education, said Narain.
Allahabad University professor Yugeshwar Tiwary said all the great modern institutions, including the IITs, in the country could see the light of the day because of Azad's farsightedness. The three-language formula advocated by Azad was later included in the National Education Policy, yielding great dividends after globalization and economic liberalization, he added.
Gandhi Sangrahalay director Razi Ahmad called upon the younger generation to follow the ideals of Azad for ensuring all-round progress of our country. He regretted that history of the country was being distorted by some self-styled historians and the people are not being encouraged to develop the process of rational thinking on societal problems. He said the government must also meet the regional aspirations of the people for ensuring country's sound progress.
At the outset, PU pro-VC Dolly Sinha welcomed the guests. PU registrar Rabindra Kumar proposed a vote of thanks.
