BHAGALPUR: The Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College administration has imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 each on 33 "senior" students for their alleged involvement in the ragging of first-year MBBS students.

The college administration came to know about the incident through a registered letter received on November 8, 2017. The letter, written to the college principal by the victims, said they were being ragged for nearly three months.

Soon after receipt of the letter, principal Dr Arjun Kumar Singh convened a meeting of the college council and the anti-ragging committee. A probe was initiated.

The anti-ragging committee, consisting of Dr S N Tiwary (chairperson), Dr Sandip Lal, Dr Ashok Bhagat, Dr Ravikant Mishra and Dr Uma Shanker Singh, identified the "culprits". They were also issued show-cause notices.

Principal Dr Singh told TOI on Monday the college administration took action against the guilty students on the basis of the inquiry report of the anti-ragging committee. "The college administration dealt with the issue as per the Supreme Court directives and the rules framed by the Medical Council of India (MCI)," he said and added the state government and the MCI would be duly informed about the development.

The fined students have been asked to deposit the penalty amount by November 30, the principal said and added those failing to comply with, would not be allowed to attend their classes from December.
