Kerala set to become the first State to achieve the feat

Minister for Local Self Government K.T. Jaleel will declare Kerala as the first State to issue identity cards to all urban street vendors at a function to be held in Kozhikode on Monday.

The distribution of identity cards to street vendors in the city will also be held on the occasion.

The programme will be held at the Kozhikode Town Hall at 10 a.m. The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation was the first urban body in the State to conduct a survey of street vendors under the guidance of the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM).

The services of MSW students were utilised for the survey that began in 2015. The survey identified as many as 2,036 eligible street vendors.

In the second phase of the project, the corporation is planning to issue smart cards to vendors. The card will enable officials of the corporation health wing as well as the police to keep watch on vendors.
