Congress ticket aspirants begin campaign without party mandate

RAJKOT: The infighting within the Congress party seems never ending. Even before the party announces name of its candidates for the assembly polls, ticket aspirants from Congress in Rajkot have started campaigning for themselves. Posters of these local leaders, who are seeking mandate from the Congress, have put up poster in the constituencies of their choice. In couple of seats, more than two Congress leaders have put up their posters on roadside.

While sitting Congress MLA from Rajkot (east) Indranil Rajguru, who is also Rajkot city Congress president, has already announced that he will be contesting against chief minister Vijay Rupani — who had won from the Rajkot (west) — couple of his supports seeking ticket from the party have put up poster in Rajkot (east) and Rajkot rural seats.

Before formal announcement of candidates, that will be on November 16, Rajguru's close aide Mitul Donga, vice-president Rajkot city Congress, has started promoting self as party candidate from Rajkot (east). His posters have come up from Parvadi crossroads to Kuvadva Road and on Sant Kabir Road.

"I have been working hard in this constituency since long. It is necessary to go to people to win the election. We hardly get 20 days for campaigning after party declares candidature, so we have to start our campaign before formal announcement," Donga told TOI. Interestingly, Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) councillor from ward 3 Gaytriba Jadeja has also started campaigning from the same constituency.

Another of Rajguru's aide Vashram Sagathiya, opposition leader in RMC, has started campaigning from Rajkot rural seat. Congress leader Manoj Rathod is also pushing hard to get the ticket from the same constituency.

"Every party members has right to campaign. They are promoting Congress, there is nothing wrong in it and there is no loss to party," Rajguru said.

However, senior party leaders in Rajkot disagreed with Rajguru's view. Congress general secretary Dr Hemang Vasavda said, "They may be under consideration of the party, they have not yet been issued the mandate. Disciplinary actions will be taken against those who are campaigning before formal announcement."
