NOIDA: Following the death of a 26-year-old pregnant woman, Mansi Singhal, in a car accident at a Sector 18 parking lot on Sunday night, local traders have raised questions on unregulated parking attendants in the area.
SK Jain, the area's market association president, has demanded police verification of all parking attendants and intervention of Noida Authority on their authorised area of operation. He is being supported by many residents, including the NCR RWA that raised similar concerns on traffic and parking related mess in the city with the Noida Authority last month.
Residents who visit the market frequently alleged that these attendants threaten and force them to leave their car keys for double/triple lane parking.
"There is one parking contractor for entire Sector 18 market. He, in turn, sublets the job to others. Apart from this, there are over 70 to 100 parking attendants operating in the sector with no means to verify their background or skills.
"Mostly, these parking attendants are between the age group of 10 to 50 years. They generally hold a criminal record and work in gangster style if you end up in an argument with them," said Jain. He further said the parking contractor is the principle owner in this case and should also be booked for negligence.
"Sunday's incident happened because people who are there to regulate these attendants, failed to perform their duty properly. The victim was a common resident of Noida like all of us. It's time the officials take note of such mishaps," said Akshay Kapoor, RWA general secretary, Stellar Greens, Sector 44 .
Jain maintained that while the Authority and police pass the buck to each other, the common man is left at the mercy of these parking mafias who keep changing the manpower employed.
"The attendants are changed regularly with no regulation of uniform or age restriction," he said, suggesting single point entry and exit of vehicles to Sector 18 market.
