American Legion post blacks out NFL to protest players’ protests

It wasn’t a typical November afternoon at the American Legion Post 951 in Boothwyn on Sunday. What would otherwise be filled with the sounds of rabid Eagles fans cheering on the Birds was noticeably absent, replaced with highlights from the Philadelphia Phillies 1980 World Series championship. No football game was playing at the post as part of an NFL blackout in response to various protest actions taken by players during the playing of the National Anthem before games.

Chesco Dems mourn ‘hero among activists’ killed in fiery Route 202 crash

Adam Harrison Swope, 38, of Malvern, chair of the Willistown-Malvern Democrats and executive assistant to Chester County Commissioner Kathi Cozzone, died in a fiery accident on Route 202 Saturday afternoon. West Goshen Police reported that Swope was killed when his vehicle, traveling south on Route 202, was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer hauling frozen turkeys. The rig had entered the southbound lanes and overturned, police said.

Ex-Norristown woman admits strangling child in her care

A former Norristown woman has admitted to endangering a child in her care when she strangled him, an act detectives alleged she also videotaped. Nersheen R. Sayers, 26, formerly of the 500 block of Cherry Street, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Court to charges of strangulation and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the March incident while the child was being cared by her at her former residence. Judge Thomas C. Branca deferred sentencing so that court officials can complete a background investigative report about Sayers.

Firefighter stipend could play into Lansdale budget talks

As Lansdale Borough officials continue talks on their 2018 budget, the Fairmount Fire Company will be a big part of the conversation. Council has started talks on how to implement, or enhance, incentives for the fire company to attract new members, and keep the ones the company already has. “It’s certainly a great service you provide. I don’t think we can say enough about that. But how do we incentivize the firefighters, and get new people in?” said Councilman Jason Van Dame.

Royersford man draws stint in prison for beating girlfriend

A Royersford man faces prison time and counseling for beating his onetime girlfriend during an incident of domestic violence at his residence. Donald Carty, 52, of the 200 block of Main Street, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court to one to two years in a state correctional facility after he pleaded guilty to a charge of simple assault in connection with the March incident. Judge Joseph P. Walsh, who accepted a plea agreement in the matter, also ordered Carty to complete a domestic violence counseling program during the course of his supervision and to have no contact with the woman he assaulted.

Television: Gadon shines in ‘Alias Grace’; more on Hollywood’s sex scandals

Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood has never been without an following, but her fame, stock, and popularity have risen since Hulu’s award-winning multi-part series and expansion of her best known work, “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Atwood’s book, and a movie and plays that have been derived from it, have been contained within the confines of the author’s story. Hulu went further in augmenting the book. It will continue to explore the journey of the handmaid, Offred, when Season 2 of “The Handmaid’s Tale” begins in 2018. No start date has been given, but industry buzz says to look for a new “Handmaids” in April.
