CHENNAI: The Tamil biography of one of the most loved Prime Ministers of the country – Lal Bahadur Shastri — Lal Bahadur Shastri: Guru of Leadership was released recently in the city. The book was released by Swami Mitrananda, director, All India Chinmaya Yuva Kendra (AICHYK). Translated into Tamil by Murugesan Chinnathambi, the biography is authored by the former Prime Minister’s son Anil Shastri and Pavan Choudary.

The biography is presented as three sections — values to inspire at individual level, interpersonal level and societal level. “Born into a poor family, Lal Bahadur Shastri rose to the top of the deck without bending any rules. He was a politically, sociologically, spiritually and psychologically wise person,” says Pavan.

Several challenges and problems within the country like acute food shortage, social unrest and even hostile neighbours, were overcome because of this man’s ideals. And the book explains and highlights them through anecdotes and memories that Anil shared with his father and the interpretations by Pavan. “When he became the Prime Minister, I was 15 and had learnt to drive a car by then.

I told his secretary that I wanted to get a driving licence, and within an hour I had one in my hand. When I showed it to my dad, he asked me ‘How did you get one? You are not 18 yet’. I replied that I got it because I was the PM’s son. All he said to me was ‘I am very hurt Anil, you violated the law of the land within the Prime Minister’s house’. I felt extremely bad and have made sure that none of my sons get a licence before they turned 18,” recalls Anil.

The chief guest for the event, Swami Mitranand, read out a few anecdotes: “I would suggest that we conduct quiz competitions, skits and elocutions for children and youth, based on the teachings of Shastriji reflected in these anecdotes,” he added.

Anu Choudary, publisher, Wisdom Village Publications; GL Sharma, director, Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management; H Vasanthakumar, MLA and owner of Vasanth & Co, were among the others present at the event.
