PUNE: Two men posing as policemen stole two gold rings, collectively worth Rs 75,000, by diverting the attention of a 65-year-old retired army colonel while the latter was on his way to a shop at Shewalwadi in Hadapsar around 7pm on Sunday.

Police have booked the suspects on charges of impersonation and cheating following an FIR lodged by Ashok Kumar Tyagi from Hadapsar.

Tyagi told TOI on Monday, "I was on my way to a tailoring shop to collect my newly stitched trouser when a person came from behind. He told me that a woman was murdered. He asked me if I had any ornaments on me and advised me to keep them in a bag. When I told him to let police conduct checking, he took me to another man who claimed to be a police inspector. I believed them to be policemen after one of them flashed his identity card."

He said, "I was wearing two silver and two gold rings. The inspector asked me to keep the ornaments in my pocket. Meanwhile, his accomplice forcibly removed gold rings from my fingers and placed them in a bag. He, however, did not touch the silver rings."

"Thereafter, one of the suspects handed me the bag containing my gold rings and asked me to leave. After reaching the shop, I opened the bag to find the two rings missing. I looked for the suspects around but they had fled by then. When I did not find any clue of the suspects, I took a call to register the complaint," Tyagi added.

Assistant inspector Sandip Deshmane of the Hadapsar police said, "The duo was waiting on a motorbike when Tyagi happen to pass by the spot of incident. On finding him wearing rings, one of the suspects came from behind and accosted him. He lured him to meet his accomplice impersonating as an inspector who was seated on a motorbike. They stole rings by diverting his attention in a span of around 15 minutes and sped away."

"Tyagi has given description of the conmen. We are working on certain clues ," he added.
