GURUGRAM: Gurgaon-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup Staqu has developed an AI application which can augment police investigations and help cops nab criminals. The application is designed to match inputs collected from crime spots with the database of known criminals and their modus operandi.

The Staqu team has compiled a database of criminals, including their pictures, videos and biometric details, with the help of inputs from police. The cops can access this database though an app called ABHED. Any cop can register and login to the app and feed a video or pictorial as well as text evidences into it during the investigation.

"The application then runs an algorithm to see if fed data matches details of those criminals already registered on the database. Our team will also help make this database available on the state police's server," said Atul Rai, a founder of Staqu.

The AI engine uses facial and speech recognition as well as text analysis to find out if a criminal in a particular case was earlier booked under any other cases.

The AI engine has neural networks, an imitation of network within the human brain. These networks match any data fed into them with information in their database to see whether a person (in this case, a criminal) already exists in the database.

"A majority of the criminals are repeat offenders and their details are already there with the cops. The database will make it easier for the cops to investigate and nab the criminals," said Rai.

He added that his team would use data to do a criminal analysis of cases, which would help cops in blind investigation.

Now, Staqu team is working with Alwar police in Rajasthan, where team has included at least 1,000 criminals in the app database. They are also working with the Punjab Police.

"Our officers are excited to have such a tool at their disposal. With its ease of searching, our investigation process will become extremely effective. The programme, launched on May 27, 2017, has already assisted Alwar police in nabbing and registering nearly 1,000 criminals," said Rahul Prakash, SP, Alwar Police.
