Panaji: President of the Goa children's court Vandana Tendulkar, appealed to the police to make child abuse victims and their families aware about Goa Victims Compensation scheme.
A victim needn't wait till the case reaches the court, but is entitled to claim compensation no sooner the case is registered, she said, adding that the child victim can receive the amount as a lump sum, depending on gravity of offence and the loss caused, irrespective of how that particular case ended.
Power to decide on compensation lies with the district collector, and the court can compel the accused to pay compensation, she said.
The Goa Victims Compensation Scheme has been in force since 2012 and was amended in 2015.
