Action sought against illegal parking

The Thekkeppuram Residents’ Coordination Committee has called upon the authorities to take stringent action against illegal parking of lorries on South Beach on the stretch from Mohammedali Beach to See Queen Hotel.

A meeting of residents’ associations and political leaders held here on Sunday offered to support the city corporation’s move to find a new parking space.

They also decided not to hold protests until the proposed meeting was convened by Mayor Thottathil Raveendran.

Illegal parking woes

The residents were of the view that illegal parking was causing accidents, besides encouraging criminal activities in the region. A teenager had died in an accident on the stretch a couple of days ago.

The participants pointed out that the lorry stand set up by the committee in 2013 in association with the Ministry of Ports as an alternative parking space had failed to yield results.

Though the stand is meant for around 70 lorries going to Valiyangadi, the main city market, those going to places such as Vadakara and Koyilandy from other States also use the facility, as a result of which other lorries are parked on the road.

They said that the renovation of South Beach was coming to naught owing to the parking imbroglio. Meanwhile, the meeting assigned a panel of political leaders to drive home their point at the meeting to be convened by the Mayor.
