CHANDIGARH: Over three years after suicide of Gurgaon college girl Pinky Chauhan, who had set herself on fire to protest faulty marksheet in September 2014, the Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday asked senior Haryana IPS officer Amitabh Dhillon to probe the case.
Justice Kuldeep Singh handed over the probe to IGP Dhillon after the CBI expressed inability to investigate the case, citing 'overburden' and suggested that investigation be handed over to an upright officer of the state police. Haryana Police have already filed untraced report in the case before the trial court.
The matter had reached the HC after the girl's father, Beerpal Chauhan, had filed a petition seeking an independent probe in the case. His contentions were that statement of Pinky was videographed and formed the basis of the FIR but certain facts were omitted from it.
He had also produced a video clip in a pen drive, which was played in the court, containing a news item in which Pinky was seen stating that the match box was given to her by 'madam.' Counsel for the petitioner had contended that since four teachers against whom there are allegations are the wives of the IAS officers, there are chances that they may influence the investigation.
The case has been fixed for further hearing on March 8.
Pinky, a 19-year-old student, had set fire to herself on the campus of Government Girls College in Gurgaon on September 29, 2014 to protest faulty marks sheet. She had died in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on October 12, 2014. The case had hit headlines in Gurgaon after the deceased's family had levelled accused the college staff of abetment to suicide.
