NAGPUR: Members of Cine Montage film society paused amid their weekly screenings on Sunday to remember Hindi poet Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh on his 100th birth anniversary.
The tributes came in the form of two short video clips, one based on his life and the other a recitation of his poem 'Ek bhootpurv vidrohi ka atmakathan'.
Muktibodh, a writer, poet and critic, is considered to be a bridge between progressive and modern poetry and is looked upon as a poet who ushered in a new era in Hindi writing which had no predecessor in terms of style and substance.
Capturing the life of the poet through glimpses of his work was an over eight-minute video clip researched and compiled by actor Dinkar Bedekar and with a voice-over by Madhuri Bedekar.
It showed the journey of Muktibodh's life and the factors that influenced his poetry. Muktibodh resided for a decade in Nagpur and that period from 1948 to 1958 is considered to be the most creative segment of his life.
Though none of his books was published during his lifetime, the poet, who died at the age of 46, left behind a rich literary legacy which took the Hindi literary circles by storm only after his death.
The second video clip had Bedekar reciting poem 'Ek bhootpurv vidrohi ka atmakathan' which speaks of oppression and maybe hidden between layers the poet's dejection of not getting recognition.
Bedekar used the visuals of a dilapidated house to bring out the essence of the poem and to also give the viewers a feel of anguish and hopelessness which was the underlying sentiment. Lines like 'Kyonki hum baagi they, aakhir bura kya hua? Purana Mahal tha dena tha deh gaya' all bring forth poet's sense of loss for a cause.
